WOGA Remembers Tom Petty

Tom Petty, one of the most timeless American songwriters, is unfortunately no longer with us. The singer-guitarist was born in Gainesville, FL on October 20, 1950. He passed away yesterday at UCLA Medical Center in Santa Monica, California.

Petty was found unconscious and in cardiac arrest on Sunday, according to Rolling Stone. He was immediately rushed to the hospital, where he was placed on life support. Despite a pulse being present, the hospital equipment was unable to register any brain activity, and the decision was made to remove him from life support. The musician’s death was later confirmed by his longtime manager, Tony Dimitriades.

It was said that Petty passed peacefully at age 66, surrounded by friends, family, and his band of Heartbreakers.

Tom gave us countless incredible hits, including “Jack and Diane,” “American Girl,” “Don’t Do Me Like That,” “Don’t Come Around Here No More,” and the list just goes on and on. The prolific artist continually topped himself and found ways to reinvent his sound.

It’s always difficult to lose the people who crafted the music that touched our lives. We may not have known them personally, but they created art that really spoke to us. Musicians like Tom Petty help to build the soundtrack to our lives. And while it hurts to know the world has lost such a genuine talent, his music and his legacy will live on forever.
