Barbie Branches Out With New ‘Career of the Year’ Doll

At WOGA, we love all things 60s, 70s, and 80s — like the toys! Launched in 1959, and popular even since, Barbie has had many iterations. After stints in medicine and music mixing, Barbie is trying her hand at robotics. Mattel’s “career of the year” Barbie is a robotics engineer, complete with safety glasses, laptop, and robot accessories. Mattel also partnered with Tynker to include free coding lessons and a workbook on computer programming, which critics call “a vast improvement” over Barbie’s last science book. Mattel’s chief technology officer says the idea is to “get more females involved” in engineering so “they are the employees that we hire in the next decade to fill the STEM-type jobs that are so critical.” On shelves Tuesday, this Barbie comes in four different skin tones, each sporting a different hairstyle. Robotics Engineer Barbie is just the latest example of Mattel’s increased efforts toward inclusivity in its iconic doll line.
